Texas & Tennessee Correspondence
The letters on this page were written between the family members of Ann Talitha (Lee) & Thomas M. "Ned" McGuire (my 3rd great-grandparents). Their children were: Mary Ann "Polly", Elizabeth, Temperance "Tempy", Nancy Jane, Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie", Catherine F., Susanah "Susan", Lucinda L. (my line) and Cornelious Butcher "Neal" McGuire. Notice in these letters how even the sons-in-law wrote as though they were addressing their own parents and siblings. Several years back, Shirley Ann (Nabors) Smith perserved these letters and made them available at the library in Cooper, Texas. Thanks Shirley. Shirley was named for her (and my) 4th great-grandmother, Mary Ann (Shirley) McGuire wife of William McGuire of the American Rvolution. They were the POWS in Canada. There is a DAR Chapter for Mary Ann in Plano, Texas, Shirley and her sister, Katie Malone are members. They descend thru: Lucinda L. (McGuire) & David Simeon Richard George Sr. Sim Jr. & Lydia Presley "Pres" (Shepherd) George Grover Cleveland & Margrita Rae "Maggie" (Layer) George Golden Ann (George) [still living] & Herbert Lee Nabors [parents]. Mary Ann (Shirley) McGuire's Will Mary Ann was born 2/17/1762 in Virginia, she died in 1845, Bedford Co., Tn. She married William McGuire 2/23/1778 in Shenandoah Valley, Rockingham Co., Va. William was born 3/12/1748 in Va. and died in 1834 in Bedford Co., Tn. They are buried in Old Horse Mountain Church Cemetery. Mary Ann was the daughter of Michael & Catherine "Katy" (Franz) Shirley. Michael was born in England in 1740 and migrated to Spain before coming to America and landing at Plymonth Rock. He fought in the Revolution as a lieutenant in the Continental Army. He served from 12/01/1777 to 11/--/1779. He was killed by Indians 7/23/1784 at Ft. Boonesboro, Madison Co., Ky. It was common, at that time, for servicemen to recieve land grants in Kentucky. Katy was born in 1743 in Paris, France. She died in Madison Co., Ky. in 1826. Katy & Michael were married in Ft. Washington, Maryland now known as Washington D. C. Letter from Temperance "Tempy" (McGuire) Carpenter & Elisha Harmon to her parents and siblings in Texas Tempy was my great-great-grand-aunt. She was born 5/27/1810 in Shelbyville, Bedford Co., Tn. She married John Wesley Carpenter, after he died, she married Elisha Harmon. Tempy's children were: Melia Ann, Thomas Benjamin, Noah Lee, Catherine Elizabeth, John & Temperance Emaline Carpenter; William W., Rufus & Louis Harmon. To: Cornelious Butcher "Neal" McGuire/McGuyer, from: Susanah "Susan" (McGuire) Shriver Both Neal & Susan were children of Ann & Thomas McGuire. Susan & Don always intended to join the family in Texas, but never managed it. They both died in Bedford County, Tennessee and are buried in Old Horse Mountain Church Cemetery. Susan was born 11/10/1816, Shelbyville, Bedford Co., Tn. and died there 4/9/1905. She married Don Carlos Shriver in November 1839, Bedford Co., Tn. Don was born 3/31/1817 in Tn. and died there 7/13/1893. Susan & Don's children were: Catherine Frances, Bibby Brooks, Thomas Abraham, Ellen Ann, Sarah Elizabeth "Bettie", Mary Burr, Cornelius Jacob, Tabitha Petway, Daniel Cookson, D. Jake, William John Bomar and Johnny C. Shriver. From: Bibby B. Bomar, to: Thomas McGuire. Bibby married Catherine F. McGuire. Catherine was born 4/17/1815 in Shelbyville, Bedford Co., Tn. and died there 5/9/1889; buried at Horse Mountain Cem. Catherine & Bibby's children were: Elijah T., Thomas M., James Brooks, William Richard, Cornelius H. and Sally Ann Bomar. December 9, 1862, Dear Brothers & Sisters From: C. B. McGuyer, to: Mary Ann (McGuire) Bryant Mary Ann was the eldest child of Ann & Thomas McGuire. She was born 7/3/1807 in Shelbyville, Bedford Co., Tn. She married Nathaniel G. Bryant. Their children were: Thomas W., Sophronia Jane, Ann Lee, Jenna E., Benjamin C., Naomi P. and John H. Bryant. Thomas W. married his cousin, Melia Ann Carpenter.
From: Archibald Pruit, to: C. B. McGuyer The Betsy mentioned in the letter below was the wife of Archibald Pruitt and a daughter of William Jr. (my 3rd great-grand-uncle; brother of Thomas) & Mary Febara (Ditto) McGuire. Betsy was my 1st cousin, 4 times removed. Her siblings were: Benjamin, Sarah, William III, John A., Feraba and Cynthia McGuire. From: D. C. Shriver, to: John Coats From: D. C. Shriver, to: C. B. McGuyer In closing; "love to 'Sim' and 'Sinda'" [my 2nd great-grandparents, D. S. R. "Sim" & Lucinda (McGuire) George]. Sim {1/1/1814 ~ 3/16/1907} and Lucinda {9/4/1820 ~ 1/24/1997}. Their children were: Sarah Ann "Sally" (my great-grandmother), Thomas Redman "Tom", Mary Catherine "Kat", Cas Andrew Jackson "Jack", Henry John, Susan Jane, David Simeon Richard "Simmie" Jr. & Robert E. Lee (called Lee) George. From: D. C. & Susan (McGuire) Shriver, to: Thomas & Ann McGuire From: D. C. & Susan Shriver, to" Neal McGuyer Corneluis Butcher "Neal" {11/18/1822 ~ 1/9/1903} was the only son of Ann (Lee) & Thomas McGuire. As far as it is known, he was the one who changed the spelling of the family name. On 6/3/1847 in Nashville, Tn. he married Mary Ann Golithan {11/4/1823 ~ 7/17/1859} Their children were: Thomas Rufus "Rufe", Sarah Catherine "Sally", Ann Lee, Nancy Jane, Cynthia Elizabeth "Betty" and John William McGuyer. On 3/1/1860 in Charleston, Tx., Neal married Salina Dukes {2/26/1839 ~ 7/25/1916}. Their children were: Cornelius Henry (called Henry), Mary Clarinda, James Gideon, Feraba Emma Estelle (called Emma), Lucinda Salina "Lucy", Daniel Christian, Simeon, Ruth and Benjamin Franklin "Ben" McGuyer.  Other children of Ann & Thomas McGuire not heard from in the above letters were: Elizabeth {6/3/1809 ~ ???} and Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" {2/--/1814 ~ 6/3/1890} McGuire. Elizabeth married Claiborne Wilson Coats. Their children were: Nancy Ann, Thomas James, John B., T. L., Dr. Cornelius Butcher, Arsula Catherine, Mary Jane and Sarah E. Coats. Sallie married William Roberds Sharp Jr. Their children were: Isabella R., Thomas Asbury, Anna Katherine, William Anderson "Bud", Nancy, Sarah Elizabeth, Nicey Belle and Mary Josephine Tennessee Sharp. |
